Ugh!

Image hosted by Photobucket.com I read a Fulghum story about how when he was 13 years old he found dishwashing DISGUSTING (particularly the part when his mom, with her bare hands, collected the left over food at the bottom of the sink). Then he went on and on. The bottom line was that someone’s gotta do the filthy stuff, and more often than not, the job is for the grown-ups.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com It struck me how so many chores I used to find filthy are now things that I’m often confronted with and actually do. This afternoon I had to clean up my bathroom. With my bare hands, I had to pick the small mass of hair from the drainage and whatever remnants there are with it. Another: I used to find raw meat disgusting. Seeing and smelling raw meat was already too much. I never imagined I would one day chop them up, wash them, mix them up with seasoning and spices, cook them and the worst of it all – eat it after seeing how it was done! Nope, never imagined I’d do that. And there other responsibilities. Like I have to be the one to wake myself up and prepare for my day. If I don’t wake up, no one would care if I end up being yelled at by my boss. And at the end of the day, I’m the only one around to look after myself. If I don’t clean up my act, everything will pile up around me and no one’s around to clean up, even out of lack of choice (my mom or Ate Maricel usually ended up doing this whenever my clutter’s already too much to bear).

I’m now, finally, in-charge. I decide what to eat, where to eat, what time to sleep, where to sleep (haha, I could even decide who to sleep with, come to think of it), the kind of furniture, appliances, how to spend my money, where to go, basically everything. Finally, I don’t always have to ask for any adult’s consent for being out late or for being out at all. I’m lucky coz with all the gruelsome stuff, I have on the other side of the leaf the passport to all these amazing privileges (the passport being my long-awaited independence – physically and financially).

I’m quite pleased with myself when I come to think of it. I may not have the perfect job, the perfect home, or the perfect set-up. But I’m an adult now. And that’s something to take pleasure in, though I always have to be on guard of all the yucky stuff.
